Janina Tatarska graduated from the I. J. Paderewski Academy of Music in Poznań, she specialized in music theory. She completed her Postgraduate Studies at the Fryderyk Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw. In 1990 she received the doctor’s degree in history from the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań on the basis of her Ph.D. dissertation “Łucjan Kamieński – a musicologist, composer”.

From 1993 to 2015 she was a Head of the Department of Music Theory in the Academy of Music in Poznań, where she holds a position of the Academy Professor. She organizes national and international conferences: “Musica practica, musica theoretica”.

She was actively involved in works of the Publishing House of the Academy of Music as a scholarly editor. In 1996-2002 she worked for the Art Higher Education Council. She also cooperated with the Henryk Wieniawski Musical Society in Poznań.

She has been holding a function of juror in the National MA Thesis Competition in Gdańsk for the graduates from the Academies of Music. She has participated in scientific and artistic tasks at the Poznań Science and Art Festival.

Her scientific research covers, among other things: Polish musical culture in the XIX and XX centuries, the composers’ environment in Poznań in the XX century, and Polish piano music. She has published over 90 articles in Poland and abroad. She has participated in a few dozen of Polish and international conferences and given master classes for students in the USA, Italy, Romania and the Netherlands.
